Insight into Royal Naval Reserves Training and Experience

Sub-Lieutenant Richard Sleight

Richard Sleight’s civilian career involves him providing engineering support to the design and build of the Royal Navy’s newest warships. As a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Reserves (RNR) he then gets to experience first-hand how the Royal Navy and its equipment contribute as a global maritime force.

Richard will provide insight into the training and experiences gained as a member of the RNR and how the RNR develops the capability to support the Royal Navy. He will discuss the role of the RNR, its branches and the training pipeline towards trained strength and the provision of operational capability. Richard will share the experiences and adventures along the way that led him to spend time as a member of Ship’s Company on the Royal Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, HMS PRINCE OF WALES on its first foreign visit. By not doing the every day, every day Richard continues his pursuit of becoming a more knowledgeable and experienced contributor to the UK defence enterprise both in his civilian and RNR roles.

Further to his RNR role, Richard works for BAE Systems as a Principal Safety Engineer, working on the Type 26 Global Combat Ship project. He specialises in Marine Systems safety supporting the engineering teams in their provision of safety assurance and justification of the platform.
