This event aims to shed light on the UK-India opportunities in aerospace and defence and allow UK businesses to learn from experts and experienced companies about how to create successful joint ventures (JVs) and technology transfers to India.
• Date: 6 September 2023
• Time: 10:30 to 12:00 (BST)
In collaboration with the UK India Business Council (UKIBC), we’re delighted to host this virtual event for UK aerospace and defence-related companies – both those looking to maintain and expand existing operations in/with India and those looking to explore the market for the first time.
In 2021, the UK and Indian Prime Ministers set out a shared vision for the UK-India defence partnership, agreeing to advance existing cooperation. Both governments have agreed a joint statement and 2030 roadmap, which includes a free trade agreement. This marks the beginning of a promising new era for UK-India research and collaboration on Indian combat air, maritime propulsion, space, cyber security, and beyond. With the third-highest defence spending in the world, India is embarking on a major defence, aerospace, and maritime upgrade with a focus on a ‘Make in India’ programme, which is already attracting international companies who are making this a key part of their global manufacturing operation.
UK defence firms need to be invested in India or partnering with Indian firms to participate in the Indian Defence market. There are two aspects to this.
• India needs foreign technology to develop its domestic manufacturing – and it has reinforced this by prohibiting the import of a range of platforms and equipment. The recent budget amplified this by raising the percentage of capital spend that must go to domestic industry and specifying a percentage of the R&D budget, which will be allocated to private enterprise.
• The UK is home to world-leading technology. As it leans towards the Indo-Pacific for strategic and economic reasons, UK firms are thinking about how to build India into their supply chains and participate in the Indian Defence market through co-creation, co-development, and by making in India.
In this in-depth workshop, you will hear from practitioners, experts, and successful JVs from the UK-India corridor. Participants will also hear from successful companies explaining how they are collaborating and creating win-win situations for both sides.
The event is aimed at companies looking to tap into the Indian market who would like to get a nuanced view on how to explore partnerships to succeed in the region.
The workshop will showcase case studies of successful and some not-so-successful JVs and broad recommendations on JV structuring, including:
• Opportunities in the Indian Aerospace and Defence sector.
• Compliance with DAP 2020 and adherence to the specific requirements of the Indian MoD in diverse procurement
programmes.
• Impact of Positive Indigenisation Lists.
• Identifying potential partners and starting the process.
• Control and management issues related to the JV.
• IPR protection, FDI compliance and raising of foreign debt for the JV.
The event will also look to address:
• How UK firms can include India in global and UK supply chains.
• Innovative examples or case studies for Indian and foreign firms to partner with.
• Why it’s important to have ‘skin in the game’ in India and how to make that happen.
• How SPVs for R&D collaboration work.
• Creating an operational presence in advance of winning orders.
• How UK firms can work with Indian universities for capability development/R&D and Indian firms can partner with UK
universities.
We will be joined on the day by:
• Richard McCallum - Group CEO, UKIBC.
• Mark Goldsack - Director, UK Defence and Security Exports.
• Hermant Sahai - Founding Partner, HSA Advocates.
• Shekhar Sardessai - Managing Director, Kineco Kaman Composites.
• Sachin Agarwal - Managing Director, PTC Industries.
• Commodore Bunty Sethi (Ret.) - Director A&D, UKIBC.
