SOCSEA24 TO BE TRULY BLUE WE MUST ALSO THINK GREEN 4th Society and The Sea Conference - Online Series & SOCSEA24 Charter

SOCSEA-content-5

SOCSEA24 takes place in the form of an online video content series and is a dual-themed ‘green and blue’ workstream which explores the strategies required to develop a sustainable blue economy.

The content was filmed on 9th & 10th September at the University of Greenwich and brought together leading experts and practitioners from across the globe, to share insights and shed light on how institutions can embed the principles of a future SOCSEA24 charter into their activities. Each session is around 30 minutes in length and includes supporting material for you to follow along, you are also encouraged to share your thoughts and ask questions in the video comments.

Take a look at our highlights from the recording days and hear what our speakers and stakeholders think about SOCSEA24:

By engaging with the series, you will hear from those in leadership positions making progress on net-zero finding ways to effectively address the biodiversity crisis, all while adapting to the evolving set of global regulations. Special guests include experts working on alternative marine fuels (e.g. the National Maritime UK Marine Hydrogen & Future Fuels Working Group), vessel decarbonisation, new technology pathways and energy solutions.

Through the online content series, you will have the opportunity to engage in deep-dive sessions and hear from companies and organisations that are excelling on core SOCSEA24 perspectives from a variety of industry clusters. There will be key discussions on commercial viability and bringing technologies to market, the best tactics in engagement and how to seek funding opportunities.

The ‘Green Waves’ conference stage focuses on energy transition and sustainability in the maritime and coastal arena while the ‘Blue Invest’ conference stage explores business opportunities in the maritime realm and the societal benefits that can be leveraged through supply chain collaborations.

The Society & The Sea content aims to help businesses elevate their knowledge on the latest innovations, trends and case studies and foster collaboration within the sector.

Sustainability behind the
scenes at SOCSEA24
filming days

At Society and the Sea 2024, we were committed to not only discussing sustainability but also embodying it in every aspect of our event. Our approach to sustainability includes:

– Eco-Friendly Badges and Lanyards: Our event badges are made from recyclable RPET, and the lanyards are crafted from recycled plastic bottles. With their fun designs, we hope attendees will keep them as mementoes, but if not, they can be returned to our events team for reuse.

– Sustainable Print Materials: Where we need to print all items are produced using recyclable materials, including Swedboard, a 100% recyclable and FSC-certified material with minimal CO2 emissions. The Swedboard production process is designed to minimise waste, ensuring that almost no raw material is wasted.

– Virtual Offers Over Giveaways: Instead of distributing physical giveaways, we provide virtual offers to our guests, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

– Thoughtful Branding and Displays: We minimise branding by using screens where possible and avoiding unnecessary physical materials. Our digital art illustrations replace traditional physical displays, further reducing our environmental impact.

– Sustainable Catering: Our catering is thoughtfully planned to reflect our commitment to sustainability, focusing on locally sourced and seasonal ingredients. We feature sustainable fish from Chalk Stream Farm, seasonal vegetables, and reduced carbon options like Hodmedod’s British grains and legumes. Our menu also includes British honey from Greenwich and dishes that support charitable and environmental initiatives, such as Waste Knot Veg and the Beans is How campaign. From hot smoked trout with summer grain salad to plant-based gnocchi with fava bean miso salsa verde, each dish is crafted with care, showcasing the best of British produce and sustainable practices.

– Carbon Footprint Offset: As part of our commitment, we will offset the event’s carbon footprint post-conference, making every effort to minimise our impact on the environment.

– Maximising On-Site Resources: We utilise as much existing furniture and equipment on-site as possible, reducing the need for additional resources.

– Encouraging Sustainable Transport: We encourage all delegates to use public transport, with a special partnership with Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. Given SOCSEA24’s focus on sustainable maritime transition, travelling to the conference by river is the most sustainable option. Uber Boat by Thames Clippers is on track to achieve net-zero emissions with all new builds by 2025, and for its entire fleet and infrastructure by 2040. By integrating these practices, we aim to lead by example, demonstrating that sustainability is not just a topic of discussion but a fundamental principle that guides every decision we make at Society and the Sea 2024.
