The Society for Nautical Research (South) is pleased to give details of its conference ‘The Ultimate Challenge: Sailing Solo Round the World’ .

The concept of the event is to create a greater awareness of the personal and technical demands of present-day long distance ocean sailing. While the sailing fraternity are to some extent aware of the reality of what is involved, the general public’s view is all too often restricted to what they see and read in the national media – where the mishaps and tragedies tend to dominate. Hence, as well as seeking to attract attendees from the local and national sailing community, we hope to encourage bookings from the wider public.

Another objective is to highlight the innovative and technical brilliance of the firms that make up the UK’s marine industry, based as it is here in the Solent area.

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has been advising on the conference programme and confirmed speakers include Tom Cunliffe, ( The Boats); Nic Compton; (The Sailors) ; Alan Priddy, (The Gear) and Mike Bender (The Mindset).
