In recent years higher education has seen a growth in the Education & Continued Professional Development for engineers in the Maritime industrycollaborations between institutions to deliver educational and training programmes. The relationships are variously called alliances, consortia, clusters or partnerships. Some such links are between industry and academia, or between organisations that are near neighbours, both partners gaining strength from the complimentary nature of their individual activities. In other cases the collaborative activity can be between similar organisations that are located on opposite sides of the world. By bridging the continental and cultural divides these programmes can attract a greater diversity of students, and ensure that their content has international relevance.

In parallel with this strengthening of collaborative networks, significant developments are being made in the way educational and training programmes are delivered. Imaginative ideas in the organisation of programmes, in modes of delivery, and in the technological infrastructure adopted have resulted in radically new programmes. Some of these innovations have transformed both the activities required of educators, and the learning experiences of students.

These developments in the establishment of networks between institutions, and the innovations in programmes delivery, can be found across the educational and training sectors, including those organisations dedicated to the professional development of engineers in the maritime industries.

This conference is intended to share the experiences of educators, trainers, employers and students in these rapidly developing areas. RINA invites papers from academics working on such developments in universities, colleges and academies, from training coordinators and managers in industry, and from professional engineers who have recent experience of such programmes as students. Relevant topics include:

  • Case studies of academic collaborations, partnerships, and alliances.
  • Case studies of partnerships between industry and academia.
  • Benefits and difficulties experienced in collaborative ventures.
  • Innovative programme structures such as for part-time or in-work students.
  • Formalised professional development programmes set up within industry.
  • Experiences of less conventional modes of delivery, such as ‘flying faculty’, distance learning, and moocs (massive online open courses).
  • Developments in technology for teaching and learning, including equipment, software, the internet, and apps.
  • Developments established in other sectors that could be applied in the maritime context.
